Gear is an essential part of learning in our Place-based model.  If students are comfortable and suitably outfitted, they are able to learn without distraction.  Having and learning about appropriate gear also fosters independence and hones executive functioning skills, as students assess their personal needs and seasonal outdoor conditions.  

In general, we recommend dressing in layers suitable for our temperamental Maine weather and in close-toed shoes that are comfortable for walking, as we spend a lot of active time outside.  It is important that the “stay at school” gear list stays at school to ensure that children are prepared for any weather conditions and outdoor learning throughout a given day.  

Class Teachers will conduct a “gear-check” during the first week of school on campus to be sure all students are prepared with appropriate gear.  A note will be sent home with any missing items.  If a piece(s) of gear goes home to be washed or to dry out, please make sure it or a replacement, comes back to school the following day.

TCS is committed to providing financial assistance for gear to any family who qualifies for financial aid.  Please contact office@thecommunityschool.me with any needs– we are happy to help! 

Please label all of your child’s gear clearly with their name.

To bring each day:

• At least 2 healthy, hearty snacks

• A healthy, hearty lunch that can be eaten as-is. We highly recommend each child having a thermos for warm food during the colder months.

• 1 full sized 1-liter water bottle, already filled when child arrives at school each day

• 1 extra layer

• Sunscreen, already applied when child arrives at school each day

• Close-toed shoes, comfortable for walking on various terrains

• 1 technical backpack that easily fits: lunch box, water bottle + extra layer and is comfortable to carry on outings and hikes (backpacks with sternum straps are preferred - examples: Osprey Ace 38, Osprey Ace 75, Gregory Wander 70, Gregory Wander 50,  Gregory Icarus 40, Gregory Icarus 3, High Sierra Tangent 45, Deuter Climber Backpack for Younger Kids, Deuter Junior Backpack for Young Kids, REI Tarn 40)
